In the spring/summer people are looking for help with their lawn care, mowing, gardening, trimming etc. During the fall raking leaves can be a huge pain and people are willing to pay handsomely for someone else to do the work. During the winter snow removal becomes priority number.

All these periods present an opportunity to earn extra money on the side doing seasonal chores for others.

Earn Extra Cash Raking Leaves

Earn Extra Cash Raking Leaves:

Many people are willing to pay for a fall clean up. This usually entails raking the leaves and cleaning up any branches/twigs that have fallen. Raking leaves can be easy however there is some equipment that can make it much easier.

  • Basic Equipment: Metal rake and bags for $20-$30
  • Intermediate Equipment: Leaf blower for $180-$300
  • Advanced Equipment: Leaf vacuum for $500-$700

Rates For Raking Leaves:

Rates for raking leaves depend on the size of the lot and the number of trees/leaves. For a small lot with only a few trees you can expect to charge ~$50-$100 but for larger lots with lots of trees the prices can range anywhere from $200-$500.

If the city comes to pick up leaves at the curb then most companies charge a bit less for the clean up. But if bagging and removal are necessary then the price can increase slightly to accommodate the extra work.

Remember, don’t sell your time too cheaply. Try increasing your rates if you find that sales are coming easily. You should also increase your rates as you start to gain word of mouth. You may lose a few customers but you’ll earn extra cash for doing less work.

Why Rake Leaves?

When you’re selling something it’s always important to create and reinforce the need. Some potential customers may not even realize why it’s important to rake your leaves each fall. By educating your customers as to why raking leaves is important they’ll place more value on your services. If they value your services more then you’ll either get more customers or be able to charge higher rates.

Consider including some of this information from the Farmers Almanac in your marketing materials.

Removing fallen leaves is vital for the health of your lawn. When grass becomes buried beneath smothering layers of leaves, it is deprived of the air, water, and nutrients it needs to survive, and it becomes a breeding ground for fungi and insects. In addition, leaves shade the grass, preventing it from receiving the sunlight it needs to thrive. Sunlight is especially crucial for cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass since their prime growing time occurs in the cooler months.

Create the need for your services with your flyers and sales pitch. Once you’ve created the need you can fill that need with your services.

Finding Opportunities:

There are a few methods that you can use to find seasonal work. Try a few of these methods at the same time to see which gives the best result.

  • Flyers – Hang flyers in local areas like community centres, libraries, grocery stores etc
  • Direct mail – Don’t pay for direct mail, just print a few hundred flyers and deliver them in your neighbourhood. Aim to deliver at least 500+ flyers
  • Door to door sales – Try going door to door, especially if you see a large amount of leaves, these are prime customers
  • Advertise on Craigslist – Make a posting on Craigslist to find more customers
  • Word of mouth – Tell your friends and neighbours to spread the word
