Making Money From Home: March Update $1,257

Making Money From Home - March Update $1,257Spring is in the air! The deep freeze is finally over. Birds are chirping. Flowers are emerging from the once frozen soil. Things are looking up. The same can be said for my goal to make money from home. It’s been over a year now that I’ve been blogging and about 8-9 months of solid online income. March was higher than February and I’m hoping this trend will continue.

You can check out my previous income updates here:

A Personal Update:

Long term readers would know that my goal is to make enough to quit my job in the next year or two.

My estimate is that I’d need about $3,000 a month to do this. The goal is to do this by the end of 2016 so there is still some time to make this happen.

But the sense of urgency has increased a bit. The environment at my employer is rather difficult. The company is doing worse each year. This translates into more day-to-day stress for all the senior and mid-level managers. It’s filtering down throughout the organization and just makes for a less than pleasant working environment.

Thankfully the terrible work environment hasn’t had a huge effect on me thanks to my already substantial side income.

Not to mention the fact that all my side income up to this point has been put into an emergency fund. This emergency fund has grown quite substantially. It’s now at the point that we could live for 6 months without worry. (All from this little website!) There’s nothing like a bit of financial freedom to reduce the day-to-day anxiety at work.

Starting and maintaining a website isn’t easy but I’m so glad I gave it a shot!

My March Update: $1,257

Big changes are on the way for all websites and the impact could be HUGE! Apparently Google is planning a massive change to their search rankings for mobile devices.

Starting April 21st all mobile searches will be giving preference to “mobile friendly” sites. It seems like already gets good marks from Google (use the PageSpeed Insights tool to check your site).

The change takes effect April 21st so I’m a bit nervous. Hopefully there won’t be a big impact to this site. Anytime Google makes a big update like this there is always a risk of losing all search traffic.

Most of my side income currently comes from my websites so any big change wouldn’t be good. Last month was no different. The sites brought in more money from ads and affiliate sales then in February. Hopefully this trend continues and April will be even better.

March Stats:

  • Sessions: 10,945
  • Pageviews: 27,375
  • Pages/Session: 2.5
  • Bounce Rate: 54%

Swagbucks brought in about $60 this month. This is going to go towards Christmas gifts. It’s super easy to get all your Christmas gifts for free using Swagbucks. You can easily earn about $500-$1,000 per year in gift cards. Use these gift cards as stocking stuffers, gifts or use them to purchase gifts on Amazon etc.

I might do a post about this in the near future since I think its a good strategy to save some money around the holidays. It just takes a bit of advanced planning.

My carpentry projects have been stalled for the last few months. We’ve been working on some home improvements and so this has taken a back seat. The goal would be to complete a few projects to sell in the summer at a local craft fair. This should make $500-$1,000 at some point in the future.

Small Business:

A few months ago I started a college course in financial planning. On top of the fact that I find personal finance very interesting this is also a possible future small business. The idea would be to offer financial planning advice for local families. There is still a lot of work to do. More courses to take. A business plan to create. But it’s exciting to have a long term project like this.

Making Money From Home:

Have you been trying to make money from home? How has it been going? Now that it’s been over a year I can’t imagine not doing it myself. Working from home takes extra focus and energy especially when its on top of a current job. But anyone can do it and I would encourage everyone to give it a shot. It doesn’t have to be a website. It could be anything to make money on the side.

Good luck!
