Need money? Why not get yourself a little freelance writing gig on the side? If you want some extra money then freelance writing is an awesome way to put some extra cash in your pocket. Writing is pretty easy. You don’t have to be a Pulitzer prize winning author to make money freelance writing. (Seriously, have you read some of the articles out there, it’s not college level writing, more like grade school). Give it a try and you’ll find it’s easier than you think.
Freelance writing is great if you need money because there’s no long term commitment. Unlike a second job there isn’t a strict schedule that you need to keep. Freelance writing will never conflict with your first job. You can write from anywhere. Your home. A coffee shop. The park. Literally anywhere. There are freelance writers all over the world who are completely location independent. These digital nomads travel from place to place and make money by freelance writing online.
Here’s what you need to know to get started…
Write for Free!
Yes. For Free! This seems counter productive but you need to get your voice/material out there and the best way to do that is to write for free. Writing guest posts for other websites will help you develop your writing skill. It will also give you some great exposure. It can also lead to a full time writing gig. Find some websites you like. Start small. Learn what their readers like and don’t like and then pitch them an idea or two.
There are lots of writers out there. You need to stand out. Be unique. Create a unique writing style. Create a unique backstory. Think up unique ideas. Whatever you choose to do just make sure its unique.
Reach out to people/websites/writers. Talk to as many people as you can. You just need a few breaks to get the ball rolling. As soon as you get some strong articles under your belt you’ll have material to show off to future clients. Getting some unique and strong articles published will greatly increase your credibility.
You need you promote yourself as a freelance writer. No one is going to do this for you. Having your own blog is the best way to promote yourself. Check out many big blogs/sites. Look at their authors. They all have their own site to show off their work. They also use their sites to practice and develop their unique writing style. If you’re serious about freelance writing then a blog is a must.
Hint: Start a blog in just minutes using BlueHost. Use this link to get a hosting package for as little as $3.49/month including a free domain name. Personally I use BlueHost and it’s super easy.
Don’t Give Up!
Don’t give up. Making money freelance writing won’t happen on day one. If you need money right now then you need to find another idea. Chances are that it will take you a bit of time to pull in a steady income from your freelance writing. Don’t give up though! Once you start to get steady work you’ll be raking in $25-$100 per 500 word article. That’s some pretty easy money.
